I NEED A FASHION GURU

Ok so this is how I feel when it comes to dressing myself or trying to find a new hair do or makeup or anything. I am about as clueless as it comes. I had often hoped along the way that someone (like a sister or a good friend) would take pity on my and give me a clue but I guess I am to travel through life hopeless.
My boss tells me a couple days ago that I need to dress up my wardrobe for work. Sheepishly I look down and think whats wrong with this tee shirt....it has Harley on it and gosh all I am doing most of the time is cleaning rooms so whats wrong with this. When I didn't say anything but stood there looking embarrassed, he did kindly mention that they have polo type shirts at Ross Dress for Less. I smiled and nodded my head in agreement then slipped away for a good cry where no one could see.
This is but the last in a lifetime of embarrassing moments because I don't have a clue. The last time I wore a dress was in the 90's when I had to go to a farewell for Jason and yes I do have a dress or two in the closet but they probably went out of style in the 80's and even if I did put one on I would feel so out of place because again no clue as to hair and makeup.
WILL SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Otherwise.....please feel free to bury me when the time comes in a faded pair of jeans and the rattiest tee shirt in the drawer. No dress then please cause it would just be rubbing salt into the wound and sacrilege.

This is mostly meant for humor but I really could use some help!!!

The real me and if you can't see I need help.....PUT ON SOME GLASSES PLEASE...LOL!!

Genalee, I know you have asked me for help in the past so here are my top suggestions for you and since we are in different locations, you'll have to follow through on this stuff and then check back in.
#make an appointment at a salon or a cosmetology school (their cheaper)and get a consultation on both your hair and make up. You can also go out to www.instyle.com and try on hair styles and clothes. Don't tell the stylist how you want your hair, let them cut it to fit (and don't argue, they will probably want to take you shorter). With our straight fine hair, you have to wash it and fix it EVERYDAY. Otherwise it looks a stringy mess.
#2Put all your clothes out on the bed. Any jeans that are frayed, ripped, faded or just plain old either get cut up for rags(or quilts) and you can only wear them to clean in, not live in. Then go to the store (Ross, a department store, etc.) and try on new jeans. For you they should be a dark wash and should not be the skinny jeans you've been wearing. Just because you can wear them, doesn't mean you should. You are tall and thin so a darker wash and a little wider leg would actualy make you still look tall and thin, but more appropriate.
#3 Get rid of all your old t-shirts! Your boss is right, you should look decent even when you are cleaning. You are representing his business, but more importantly, yourself. While you are shoping for jeans, pull out some polos or tops (not t-shirts) that have a little more fit or flair to them, i.e henley's with buttons, and put some color to it, you can certtainly wear color. And make sure they are long enough that when you are bending over, you don't see skin. The sleeves should not be the cap sleeves, but longer (almost to elbow or 3/4 length).
#shoes - if you don't have a cute pair of sneakers or sandals, you should at least find a pair for work.

again, one great place for ideas is www.instyle.com they usually show higher priced stuff, but you can easily duplicate it at lower priced stores, Walmart, Target, Ross (I don't know what you have available to you). Also the What Not to Wear website is really good too. You should spend some time looking and watching other people, see what looks good and then try to duplicate the look for yourself.

It really is about trying to make the best of what you have. I know I have seen you at different times over the years where you were stunning. Everyday, shower, hair, makeup, clothes. It takes a little more time and a little more effort, but the way people will respond to you will amaze you.

Hope this helps, I don't want you feeling bad, you are a beautiful woman, you just need to spend a little time bringing out that beauty.

Just a couple more comments (sorry, you probably didn't expect this!) I blew up your picture and here a re a couple of observations. The bottom part isn't bad at all. The Harley shirt though doesn't do a thing for you. It is way too big so it makes you look square on top, it also makes your shoulders look like a line backer. So the shirt is wrong but the biggest part of that is that it is just way too big. You could wear a few sizes smaller and something that fits closer to your body.

Next, no make up at all. You don't need a lot, but some powder or foundation to even out your complexion (try the mineral stuff, it's great and it's not heavy), you need a little mascara and something on your lips (not necessarily lipstick, try a colored lip shimmer like Burts Bees makes)

Lastly, when I saw you at the What Women Want show, your hair was down, clean and curled, it looked great. If you want to keep long hair, you have to take care of it everyday. Just clipping it up or pulling it on your head somewhere in a scrunchy doesn't work. It's not flattering to you and it makes you look like a little kid. So either spend some time on it every day or consider something shorter that is less work.

I honestly hate the routine of getting ready every day, but I feel better when I do and I feel better about myself. I also think about what Bruce must think when he comes home and sees me in sweats, no make up, not showered and looking like a bum. You really need to think about what you want to be and then go for it.

Happy Birthday Sara, I too miss you and think about you often. I can hardly wait to come up and see you Genalee, let's plan a time just for the girls and we can go shopping for some new tops and etc. I love and miss you too. It is a beautiful picture you have posted for Sara's Birthday yesterday. I hope all is well and that you are ok. See you very soon. Love you always.

Well I don't really know how much help I can be, you see I was also born in your generation. I have over the years though tried to keep up on what's hip and what's not. The thing for me is to get up each day and do my hair and put on make up. It is a tedious ritual but I feel better about myself if I make the effort. I think the key to looking good is feeling good! Early to bed, early to rise gives us a better complexion. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize especially since you are a smoker. Smoking tends to dry the skin and age it faster. Then not too much sleep but enough (8 hours optimal)go online and look for hair styles that compliment your face (You look great with your new do). Then (and this is my weak point) look for make up style, shades, and content that will enhance your face. I am still searching and researching this one, trial and error. For clothing I refer to Ann's comments, she is the guru on that one. Go a little young. Becky got me interested in shoes and it makes me feel soooo good to have a new pair of shoes that are really young and flattering. Jeans are a staple, putting the right top with the jeans is a must. Something light and summery, you can get away with cute summer tops, but sleeves is a must with our aging arms, none of this tank top or spagetti straps for us. Anyway hope some of this helps. I am not a good one to ask help from I just keep trying to do my best but I could stand some improvement also. Just recently had my hair cut and I like it a lot, the best thing I discovered was a flat iron, Love it, Love it, Love it!
